UConn John Dempsey Hospital improves patient safety with Telesitter technology

The University of Connecticut (UConn) John Dempsey Hospital has implemented Telesitter, an electronic technology that monitors vehicle video cameras, to improve patient safety and improve staff resources.

This advanced system enables trained staff to remotely monitor patient activities through a video surveillance system.

The Telesitting solution allows one staff member to care for eight patients simultaneously from a central location.

This technology also enables staff to communicate directly with patients and generate the necessary responses or alarms.

Highly trained technologists can record monitoring status and any measures directly into the electronic health record in EPIC.

UConn Health chief information officer Rick McCarthy said: “Telesitting technology is a great advancement that brings more support to our hospital staff which is a huge success.

This effort includes the deployment of 15 electronic camera carts, which can be easily moved to any hospital room.

A thorough nursing assessment confirms the need for this technology, which is then used to improve the individual patient’s safety needs in consultation with the nursing supervisor.

UConn Health EPIC Specialist, Darcie Schwab and Information Technology project manager, Jason Cardona, implemented the Telesitting program.

UConn John Dempsey Hospital Nursing Operations Associate Director Anna Humennyj is leading the deployment of this technology.

Anna Humennyj said: “This is an exciting opportunity to improve our patient’s health. Patient safety is our number one priority, and we are now able to monitor our patients in real-time and provide real-time interactions and feedback to the care team. ”

The study team developed the process, strategies and study plans for this project. Together with EPIC head coach Daniel Ozimek, they provided extensive training for a successful November 5, 2024 event.

Jason Cardona said: “Our first visit in November was a success, and I’m happy to share that on the first day we were able to avoid the fall of two patients who were out of bed identified by EVM technicians who they quickly fell.

After a few seconds, the nurse rushed into the room and ordered the patient to have no side effects. It has been great to see the impact of this technology solution on patient safety and the added value it brings to patient care. ”
